Empowering Life Quotes from the Land of Sisu

This year, 2017, and more specifically today, December 6th, marks Finland’s 100th year independence anniversary. How is that for something to celebrate?! I’m certainly standing tall and proud today, and hence I want to share my Finnish pride by sharing some empowering life quotes from my land.

Let’s dive straight into them!

“Happiness is a place between too little and too much.” – Finnish Proverb

This is music to my ears. In Finland, and very much so in the other Nordic countries, we really value balance. From work-life balance to family and me-time balance to giving yourself treats every now and then balance. This, I believe, is why Finland, and the other Nordic countries, are often reported to be some of the happiest in the world.

“Even a small star shines in the dark.”  – Finnish proverb

That’s right. It doesn’t matter how small your little act of kindness is or how few people are smiling if you are. Your joyful efforts will always shine loud and clear, no matter how big or small they are.

There are no shortcuts to any place worth going.” – Finnish proverb

#Truth! This applies to everything in life – from your health to your wellbeing to your work to your lifestyle to your relationships. If you work hard at them, step-by-step, little-by-little, you will get exactly where you want to go – and enjoy the process whilst you’re at it!

You can never cross the ocean until you have the courage to lose sight of the shore.” – Finnish proverb

A new destination, a new transformation, a big change in your life – they all take courage. It might feel like a big ocean to cross when you start but you can cross it a lot quicker and more enjoyably if you leave the old, unnecessary, and unhelpful things on the old shore.

“Pay no attention to what the critics say; no statue has ever been erected to a critic.” – Jean Sibelius, Finnish composer

This is one of my favourites. It really relates to my previous post on how to stop caring what others think. After all, haters are always gonna hate.

Mind is everything. Muscle – pieces of rubber. All that I am, I am because of my mind.” – Paavo Nurmi, Finnish Olympic runner also known as the “Flying Finn”

This is why training your mind is just as important as training your body. Your mind can stop your body – and yourself in general – from doing things that it’s actually capable of. Your mind needs to be determined, resilient, and strong if you want to get anywhere in life.

“You can only get over your fears if you attack them head-on.” – Mika Häkkinen, Finnish World Champion Formula 1 driver

Make fear your frenemy. Get close and personal with it, find out why it’s there, and then start chipping at it block by block. Best of all, keep going even if you’re afraid. Because every step you take forward will diminish that fear that’s holding you back.

A strong desire derives a person straight through the hardest rock.” – Aleksis Kivi, Finnish author

This is all about sisu – the Finnish trait of resilient, persistent determination no matter what. If you know why you’re doing what you’re doing and you’re fully committed to it, nothing can stop you from getting there. You might get a few rocks on the road but they won’t hold you back.

“Don’t forget to play.” – Alvar Aalto, Finnish architect and designer

No explanation needed :D Just a repeat – don’t forget to play!

I hope these life quotes from my little but strong land of Finland have brightened your day.

I wish you good luck on your adventures and until next time!

Sending you love, light, and happiness,

x Susanna
